BAILEY HOUSES

The Bailey was a defended yard.

The Origin and Meaning of the word ‘Bailey’ derives from the Old French word ‘baille’ meaning an enclosure.

Originally the Bailey was surrounded by a wooden stockade. The entrance to the Bailey was through a large wooden gate. Some Bailey gates had Guardhouse built either side.

In our modern version of a Bailey House the protective terrace wall surrounds the outdoor spacing facing north onto the mountain.
